The pyramids of Egypt – How and why are they built?
The main driving force behind the construction of the pyramids was the desire for eternity. Anyone who is lucky enough to visit the pyramids can not fail to be intimidated by its sheer scale and incredible expertise, technology used to build them.
The pyramids were built as tombs for kings and queens, as part of the funerary complex, which also shrines and temples. The priests summon the spirits of deceased royalty and make offerings to ensure their immortality would come true.
Many pyramids were built between 2700 and 1640 BC, and many still surviving today, although many were reduced to rubble.
An architect by the name of Imhotep was the first constructor of the main pyramid. She started doing a grave in the form of a mastaba, a long, flat, rectangular building made of baked clay sun bricks. The walls were about 12 feet high.
Imhotep stone used to build and maintain with the addition to the tomb until he had a period six-layer, step pyramid, which was 200 feet high. This was the step pyramid and Saggara, the first Egyptian monument was completely cut stone.
Imhotep was highly respected and venerated after his death as a god. His incredible achievement still stands today in Memphis, south of Cairo.
Between 2600 and 2500 BC, the time of the fourth dynasty, the Egyptians had perfected his great skill in architecture that allows them to build the pyramids most famous and spectacular those of Giza.
These pyramids, known as Menkaure, Khufu and Khafre, is a true pyramid shape and was originally built with smooth white stone limestone faces. What happened to become one of the Seven Wonders of the World by the fear they inspired.
The largest pyramid at Giza in Egypt, built for and bears the name of Pharaoh Khufu, is 481 feet high. It contains about two and a half million stone blocks and the average weight of the blocks is two and a half tons. Some weight of up to fifteen tons.
Most of the stone used to build these monuments is extracted limestone. A much harder stone, granite, also was used for the construction of the internal passages and burial chambers. This was at a distance of over five hundred miles across the river from the quarries of Aswan, in the south. The ramps were used to drag the stones in place.
The pyramids of Egypt after Menkaure (204 feet) and Khafre (471 feet) standing next to that of Cheops.
Within the funerary complex of Chephren is also the famous limestone statue of the Sphinx, which is the larger picture and more old man with a lion's head.
The Sphinx is much smaller than the great pyramids, but remains large. It is 66 meters high and is 240 feet long. The statue was intended to represent a divine guardian and his boss thinks he is Khafre himself.
There is a granite slab inscribed between the paws of the Sphinx. This slab describes a dream that a prince named Tuthmosis had while resting in its shade for a hunt gazelle.
He dreamed he was approached by the Sphinx and promised him the kingdom, if you turn off the sand from his body, which made it hard to breathe. Thutmose was to force the Sphinx and even ordered the construction of mud brick walls around the memorial to discourage further encroachment.
That the Sphinx kept his word is demonstrated by the year 3000 the slab old placed by Thutmose IV, who was the new pharaoh of the earth.
