Napoleon's Irish Legion was created in August 1803 aimed at the vanguard of an invasion of Ireland. Napoleon thought that the force would be considered a liberating force rather than one invading French soldiers need to be committed and that would tie up a number of English troops. To achieve these objectives, the Legion expanded battalion regiment, the men were recruited from Scottish and Irish Jacobite expatriates, POW camps, Press Ganged sailors Irish and German and Polish recruits. After the abdication Napoleon in 1814, the Irish Regiment were re-organized by the government of the Bourbons, who lost their distinctive green uniforms to be replaced by blue uniforms heaven. During the Hundred Days, Louis XVIII requested the Regiment to join him, he replied that he would gladly accompany him to the border, but never will fight against his adopted country of France. The regiment was officially disbanded on 28 September 1815, were discharged officers, while the troops were sent to Toulon, where a Royal Regiment of Foreign Affairs is being formed.
