When it comes to theater of the absurd, you either love or hate. I happen to be closer to the latter. Hate is a strong word, but meaningless language that theater style is strange and unappreciated by many theaters. You have to separate what one likes or not a particular style of theater to see a production as bright as the King's departure. Geoffrey Rush gives a stand-out performance as King Berenger, a performance that is hard to imagine that do not receive a Tony nomination, if not winning a Tony Award. In his Broadway debut in the Oscar winner gives what must be a physically demanding performance that the best means man of his age. This production, smartly directed by Neil Armfield, who also co-wrote the adaptation of this production along with Mr. Rush maintains a breakneck pace that keeps the production moving forward as we see this man to come to terms with his own mortality.
He guide by the way by his eldest wife, Queen Margaret (on a flat monochromatic representation by Susan Sarandon), a cold woman and cynical is the voice of reality as announced to the king "You are going to die in an hour and a half. You are going to die at the end of the work." For most of the work, Ms. Sarandon is set dressing. It's the final scene of the play where you are given a chance to shine as she guides the king through the detachment and death.
Rounding out this cast of characters are La Guardia vaudeville, played by Brian Hutchison, a kind of uncle-ish man Greek chorus. He has a knack for Back to the statements of the obvious. William Sadler is the doctor, Andrea Martin to her maid of overwork and strong and Lauren Ambrose as his second wife of worship, the Queen Mary. Ms. Martin gives a performance as the maid crazy running around the stage attending to the whims of two queens and a king dying. Lauren Ambrose as Queen Marie emotional is the perfect counterpoint to Sarandon sardonic, Queen Margaret as fawns on the king to try and achieve that cling to life.
At the exit of the king, third play by Eugene Ionesco in his trilogy Berenger (the other two, be the murderer and rhino) we see the 400-year-old king moves through the process of dying. We spent two hours watching the dying process, and playing before us in fits and starts. While Mr. Rush gave a performance once in a lifetime, ultimately, I found myself wishing that the man just went to bed and die already. That said, if absurd theater is your thing, by all means go. You will be treated to an extraordinary production with an excellent cast.
